Hand food and mouth disease

There has been a case of a sibling reported with Hand, foot and mouth disease at this school.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is not a notifiable disease under the Public Health Act. However, to help prevent spread parents should report the illness to the school principal.

Children with hand, foot and mouth disease should be kept home from school or childcare facilities until their blisters have dried-up, and any rash (if present) has gone and any fever has settled.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a virus that is usually spread by person to person. Good hygiene is the best protection.

Some signs of infection may include blisters, fever or rash. Please consult your doctor or NSW Health for further information.
2020 class names

This year there will be a change of the class names.

The 5 support classes will remain the same, after local landmarks - Pioneer, Alexandra, Fitzroy, Gib & Nattai.

The 22 main stream classes will be named after the classroom teacher, eg 5/6 Westley.

Even though we enjoyed having the classes named after flora and fauna in 2019, with this year's change to surnames, we are hoping it will make life easier for all of the students and families.

Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

Southern highlands academically gifted class 2020

The Southern Highlands Academically Gifted Class (AG) offers an opportunity for gifted children to work with their intellectual peers, remain in their home schools and communities and be extended through a rich program developed to optimise their learning and social skills. This class will complement the excellent work being done by our teachers in public schools. There will be opportunities for global thinking, extension and enrichment activities, student generated learning through negotiated contracts and the encouragement and facilitation of integrated learning extending into individual areas of interest.

This one day a week class is for children in Years 5 and 6 who are eligible to enrol in public primary schools in the Southern Highlands. Children will come together at Moss Vale Public School from 24th to 26th February 2020 and each following Tuesday for approximately 26 weeks.

Entry: Is by application and is conditional upon concurrent enrolment at your local public school in the year that students attend the AG class.

Transport: To and from the class is the responsibility of parents and a parent meeting will be held early in 2020 to discuss how this new AG class community can help each other.

Selection: Is based on testing and there will be several test sessions on

Monday 4th November at Moss Vale Public School or

Tuesday 5th November at Bowral Public School

An application package can be obtained from your Principal or downloaded from the Moss Vale Public School website. There is a test fee of $20 which covers the proforma needed for the test that is not reusable. Testing takes approximately one hour and there are no preparations needed for the test other than a good breakfast and a good night’s sleep the night before.

Talk to your child’s stage leader (Mrs Penn, Mr Leith or Mrs Todd) if you are interested in this opportunity for your child. The closing date for applications, including your child’s teacher comments, is 18th October 2019.

There is NO automatic entry to the class. If a Year 5 child who was in an AG class in 2019 wants to be considered for the class in 2020, they can choose to either reactivate their previous year's test results or sit the test again. They must, however, complete a new application form.

Congratulations to our Senior Boys AFL team who represented MPS at Round 2 of the Paul Kelly Cup in Figtree this week. The boys should be proud of their efforts. The level of sportsmanship was outstanding.

They have given up many lunchtimes for training sessions over the past 3 terms. Unfortunately they were defeated in Round 2 against two teams, however came off the field with their heads high and proud of what they had accomplished, then went off to play their own game on the sideline.

A big thank you to our parents who supported our students in transport and on the sideline.

Both our boys and girls teams have enjoyed the experience and asked if we can train for next year! We will ask for expressions of interest from Year 4 students who may like to be a part of this competition and start training next term in preparedness for next year.

The first stop of the day was the ‘Rocks Discovery Museum’, there, our students experienced up close what they had been studying in the history unit, ‘Australia as a Nation’. After exploring three floors of early Australian history and unique artefacts our students eagerly documented their findings and walked to the ‘Museum of Contemporary Art’ at Circular Quay.

At the MCA our students were exposed to artwork from various Australian artist, such as Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, Lucas Abela and Kylie Banyard. Our students appreciated, a diverse range of mediums including painting, video, sculpture, installation, drawing and performance. After a feast for the eyes our students took some time out for the traditional ice-cream stop to make their taste buds happy. While they feasted on their well-deserved treats our students enjoyed Indigenous music on the docks of the busy Circular Quay.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

We need your help. Our election day barbecue and cake stall fundraiser is being held on Saturday and we are in desperate need of volunteers. Fundraisers like this help the school in many ways including helping to buy new laptops and other resources for students and classrooms, new books for the library and the new playground. We especially need helpers from 12 until we finish up around 3.30pm. If you have an hour or two to spare, please let your child’s teacher know. If you’re not able to help on the day but can donate homemade baked goods or homegrown produce for the cake and market stall, that would also be appreciated.

Flying High

On the 15, 16 and 17 of May our Year 6s adventurously headed to Camp Wombaroo to push themselves out of their comfort zone and challenge their wits with canoeing, archery, giant swings, climbing and problem-solving activities. Our excited students were dropped off at the meeting point by their equally excited parents/carers and started their memorable excursion with eagerness. Our Year 6 students were led and mentored by experienced instructors and fed by superb chefs. It was 2 nights and 3 days full of engaging activities and fun-filled memories that our students will cherish forever. The director and the camp leaders of Camp Wombaroo commended our students for their cooperative and respectful behaviour. They also were impressed how our students pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and reached new goals. Of course, this excursion could not have happened without the tireless efforts of our amazing educators; Mrs Stafford, Mrs Scott and the wonderful Ms Stirton who organised a perfect experience for our students. I would personally like to thank Mrs Todd and Mrs Trifonov for bringing us coffee every afternoon and for showing support and care to all the students and staff members. It was really appreciated by all. I would also like to thank Mr Mansfield for making time in his busy schedule and visiting our students on the last day; making it extra special.

Be sure to check out the Wombaroo Video on Mr C’s YouTube channel to live or relive the excitement! Click on the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDmo2GjePJI

Year 6 Cardboard Cars

                Start your Engines!

‘Can you make a fast cardboard car?’ That is the question our year 6 students were asked on Tuesday the 14 of May as part of our STEM at school challenge. Our students collaborated in groups, brainstormed ideas, sketched original designs and created impressive cars that tore up the school’s field. Our children worked with limited resources to produce racing cars that followed strict guidelines and reached specific goals. Students had to make sure their designs were technologically sound, aesthetically pleasing and very, very fast! Mr Mansfield judged the creations and the ultimate winners were Ben S, Ben B, Josh, Austin and Zayne.

Congratulations to all involved and a special thank you, to Mr Mansfield for providing such wonderful feedback to all the students and for presenting the trophy to the winners!

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

SRC member, Austin shares with the assembly, 'Anzac day is not based on a celebration of a victory. It has become the day on which we remember all Australians who have served in all wars in which Australia has been involved. This includes the second world war, when Japanese attack on Asia brought conflict to our shores for the first time.'

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Harmony Day

Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community.

Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.

Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

What is Mittagong Public School doing?

During week 8, students will be involved in various class activities involving cultures and inclusion, and on Thursday 21 March 2019, students will be asked to wear orange or choose to wear traditional cultural dress for Harmony Day. During the day, children and staff members will join hands and pass the ‘harmony’ ball around a big circle. The event will be recorded and uploaded for parents to see the celebrations. Children are also encouraged to bring a gold coin donation.

Why Orange?

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Students can choose to wear something orange on 21 March to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Chickenpox

Chickenpox and Shingles

Chickenpox is a common viral infection that can reappear later in life as shingles.

What is chickenpox and shingles?

Chickenpox and shingles (varicella- zoster) are a highly contagious virus and a member of the herpes family. The disease is usually mild in children but can be more severe in adults and can cause serious illness.

The adult form which most commonly occurs is shingles. Complications can include meningitis and pneumonia. In rare cases it can involve the joints and other organs.

Signs and symptoms

For chickenpox:

Mild fever

Runny nose

Fatigue

General rash

For shingles:

Painful skin eruptions that generally appear on 1 side of the body.

How is the virus spread?

Shingles is spread by direct contact with an infected person. Chickenpox is spread by coughing and direct contact with an infected person. Children are usually infectious 2 days before the rash appears.

What is the risk of transmission?

People rarely get chickenpox twice, whilst shingles occurs more commonly in aged people and individuals that are immunosuppressed.

Shingles is a reactivation of a previous chickenpox infection. Most people have had chickenpox as children and are therefore at greater risk of contracting shingles as adults.

What precautions can you take to avoid the virus?

Practice good personal hygiene by covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

Disposing of soiled tissues

Washing hands carefully

Not sharing eating utensils, food or drinking cups

Pregnant women should avoid contact with anyone with chickenpox.

How is chickenpox and shingles prevented?

Childhood vaccination programs

People with chickenpox should avoid contact with others and not attend work, school or childcare until 5 days after the onset of the rash when all blisters have crusted.

On Wednesday 20 February 36 fantastic athletes from Mittagong PS set out to compete at the annual WDPSSA District Swimming at Bowral Pool. This year the event featured 10 schools from the Southern Highlands area. It was a lovely, cool day for the spectators who were treated to some excellent competitive swimming. Mittagong students represented their school proudly and achieved some great results. Regardless of if they progressed to the Regional competition, or received a ribbon for placing in an event, we should all be proud of them for their effort.

A big congratulations to Michal K, who finished first in all events he entered on the day, and took out the Senior Boys Competition. The family double was completed with Yvette also progressing to the Regional competition. The Junior Girls 4x50m Freestyle team of Yvette, Mia, Klara and Amelie finished second in their event, and will also head to Regional.

Mrs Fisher did an excellent job of organising and running the event this year, well done!

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

CURRENT SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAM IS NOT CONTINUING:

P&C has decided to suspend school banking from next week. Last day for banking will be Friday 8 November.

Following a review of school banking programs in Australian primary schools by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) in October, this week we received written notification of changes in regulations from Commonwealth Bank.

These changes put onerous obligations on volunteers and as a result, . Our school banking coordinator and volunteers have done an amazing job for the four years the program has been operating at Mittagong Public and should be commended for giving up their time each week to administer school banking.

Other banking options to encourage financial literacy and saving are being investigated. For further information, you can contact school banking coordinator Amanda Hayes on 0407 713 437.

We apologise for any disappointment this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the club had decided to donate half of the proceeds from their fundraiser last week towards resources for our kindergarten students who sang for the members of the club last Tuesday. The cheque was presented by club members Shirley and Barry. Mittagong Public would like to formally thank the Mittagong and District Senior Citizens and Welfare Club for this generous contribution and look forward to many more visits and sharing of music.

On Tuesday, all kindergarten students visited the Mittagong and District Senior Citizens and Welfare Club to perform some of the songs they have been learning during kinder singing time. After the students performed, the Club’s Ukelele Group performed a song they had been learning which funnily enough was one that our kindergarten students also knew! The Ukelele Group and audience loved seeing the students’ reaction to this which included joining in with the singing and showing everyone some actions to go with the words. The Club ran a fundraiser on the day and generously offered to donate half of the proceedings towards some resources for kindergarten. A wonderful time was had by all.

Last Friday, students in years 3 to 6, as well as schools from around the Highlands, travelled to the Church Rd Fields in Moss Vale for the annual League Tag Gala Day put on by the NRL. It was a beautiful day for sport, and the 250 MPS students were excited to show their best. Each team played four games for a total of an hour of football. Mittagong students displayed fantastic sportsmanship throughout the event and played their hearts out. Passing, kicking, scoring tries and having fun with friends was the order of the day. There were lots of tired, hot students at the end of the day!

A special thank you to Mitch from the NRL for creating the draw, and to Robyn Griffiths from Colo Vale PS for doing all the behind the scenes work to make this day happen.

Thanks also to the great students from Bowral HS and Moss Vale HS who refereed the games and made the day fair and fun for the players.

We of course could not take so many students to a Gala Day without the assistance of the wonderful parent volunteers who came along to help. Stage Two would like to thank Phillipa Todhunter, Cath Dawes, Scott Lawrence, Glenn Turner, Katie Hinton, Rodney Pull, Andrea Eaton, Dionne White, Barnaby Bowden and Bec Houghton. You are all awesome!

Year 5 teacher, Mrs Anderson said Hugo approached her one day with the idea of participating in the Cut or Colour campaign for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. Hugo had a goal to raise $700. The students and staff starting donating to his cause, by the time the big day came to shave his hair off, he had raised over $900.

The week leading up to the big shave, Hugo appeared on the local radio to share his story. He also signed up to a web based fundraising page. His job to raise funds to assist his mum and give money to cancer research, was serious business for this 11 year old.

Mr Konz was also excited and nervous to be supporting Hugo by having his head shaved too.

Thank you to Liz from Gossip Hair and Beauty, who volunteered her time to do the deed making the boys bald.

To date the funds raised is just over $5000 and growing.

Road safety

Here are a few things you can do to help keep your children and others safer during drop-off and pick-up times during the school week:

• Make sure your children are fastened in the correct child car seat for their age and size and that it is fitted correctly.

• Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone and look out for children who may be about.

• Watch for flashing lights on buses. They let you know that there may be children crossing or about to cross the road. A 40km/h limit applies when school bus lights flash.

• Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

• Always park and turn legally around schools. Manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns are dangerous during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.

• Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school’s designated drop-off and pick-up area. Never call out to them from across the road – they may run to you without checking for traffic.

• It’s safest for children to get out of the car through the Safety Door, away from passing traffic. This is the rear footpath side door of the car

Please, let us all help to keep our children safe at all times.

Story Time in KE

This term parents, grandparents and other family members of students in KE have been coming to the classroom to share a favourite story. it has been a wonderful experience for students with a focus on sharing, connecting and belonging.

The Italian poet Cesare Pavese wrote 'We do not remember days, we remember moments.'

Cast your mind back to your own childhood and nestled among the memories is a time when someone you loved shared a story with you, just you.

Students were greatly entertained by Opera Australia

when they visited with their production El Kid. This performance focused student attention on ways to manage bullying. The performers bought their usual high standard of production and managed to impart some valuable strategies for the children, they even managed to raise a giggle or two.

The ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards are unique; they are the only national teaching awards where nominations are made by parents, students and school communities - making these the 'people's choice' teaching awards.

Congratulations to Mr Christodoulopoulos for being one of the thirteen national award recipients who have been honoured for their inspiring and innovative contribution to teaching.

I would like to commend Jim on his success and also recognise his comments on the collegiality and support he has experienced at this school from staff and parents. This school community's support of Mr C and our staff in general has certainly helped to create conditions in which great teachers can thrive. For this reason, I commend all of you and celebrate the win that this is for Mr C and also for our whole school. Well done Mr C.

Students and Staff got a lovely surprise when walking around the school.

In gardens, on walls, on classroom steps were black lucky stones with a red heart painted on them.

The source of these lucky love stones is unknown. It doesn't really matter where they came from. They have put smiles on peoples faces and got people talking about something positive.

Thank you to the Phantom who is sharing the love at our school.
